EXHIBITS & INSTALLATION

CCTA Exhibit

EXHIBIT DESCRIPTION:

The Centre for Sustainable Practice presents an exhibit of Seed Concepts cultivated during Triga Creative’s Eco-Design Charrette as part of the Climate Change Theatre Action Festival 2021. The online charrette nurtured design concepts for all 50 Climate Change Theatre Action plays with ecological consciousness at the centre of the creative process. International charrette participants cross-pollinated the germination of their Seed Concepts with students from the Globally Networked Learning program applying Tanja Beer’s ecoscenographic framework. The student concepts were tended by professors Tanja Beer at Griffith University, Tessa Rixon at Queensland University of Technology and Ian Garrett at York University.

Et Après – And After

INSTALLATION DESCRIPTION:

Et Après – And After was initially created for the Prague Quadrennial in 2019. Offering a space that facilitates collective intelligence, the curator of the Quebec Exhibition and her team wish to explore the major transformations that we must imagine in order to face the global ecological crisis. How can we change our ways of working while offering powerful and relevant creations? By highlighting each part of a production system to adapt them to the socio-ecological transition. Thus, Quebec presents the work of twenty designers from various practices, questioning them about their artistic vision and their relationship with the environment.

Odditorio | A Performative Art Installation

INSTALLATION DESCRIPTION:

Odditorio is an interactive art installation inspired by the story Sweeney Todd. It brings together Troy’s interests in immersion, spectatorship, wonder, and the merging of historical and contemporary technologies. Combining installation art, puppetry, media, and performance, Odditorio re-envisions several outcast characters as members of a freakshow in an amusement park. He merges the carnivalesque with steam punk to expose the mechanics of movement in the environment. Four-characters become oddity dolls, built from found objects/toys and inhabit their own cabinet of wonder. Collectively, these cabinets pivot, open, break apart and store objects that he uses to build an evocative installation landscape.

Viewers are encouraged to investigate the installation fully and discover all the details which provide a further glimpse into each of the characters. They will be immersed in a video and soundscape which will highlight various parts of the devised narrative inherent in the artwork. One of the collaborators will always be in the space to discuss the work with attendees.

Troy, as the creator/artist, will animate objects and space, like a puppeteer, with support of his collaborators, during in two performative events for audiences. The artists explore the use of live feed layered with pre-recorded video from rehearsal to skew perception of reality, time and space. This performance is two fold, a thirty minute immersive performance and then a twenty minute audience interaction piece where the spectators manipulated and discovered moments in the artwork, which triggered my collaborators to play music, project video and/or interact with them to encourage active participation.

The Toledo Panorama, A Symphony in Colour and Sound – Promenade Concert

WORKSHOP & INSTALLATION DESCRIPTION:

This Promenade Concert is part of WSD 2022 Living Legends Activities.

Pamela Howard has designed this devised artwork workshop for emerging designers and student participants; inspired by El Greco’s painting “The Plan and View of Toledo’ and writings from the period through today. The artwork will explore ‘the universality of displacement’, looking at immigration/refugees and how art gives the dispossessed the ability to triumph over their personal circumstances.

Known for her playful drawing techniques, Pamela will mentor students who will work in teams of two to apply her methods of image creation that synchronize colour, sound and word. Participants will paint, sketch and collage one section of a two metre high by sixty metre long assemblage diorama that will provide a continuous narrative about immigration, identity, events, and ancestry. Each team will be responsible for building an image that illustrates a part of the story, but they must also address transitions from the panels before and after, requiring highly collaborative skills. Simultaneously, a small group of musicians will be rehearsing a musical score that will integrate with the visual storytelling.

The final presentation of the Toledo Panorama will be before an audience, presented as a Promenade Concert.

Thirteen Moons

EXHIBIT DESCRIPTION:

Thirteen Moons is a new mural by Alex Janvier, composed of 13 painted panels arranged in a circle. Inspired by Elders who gather in Banff each year, Janvier set out to create a space for them to meet in the round. The circle is a recurring motif in Janvier’s work, echoing traditional structures, the drum and the planet. It also reflects the idea of the Four Directions, represented by a circle divided into four quadrants. 13 panels represent 13 months of the traditional calendar; these 28 day moon cycles give 364 days in a year, with one left over for a feast day. In Janvier’s distinctive abstract style, the mural carries messages of change, renewal and a path towards healing.

The innovative design of Thirteen Moons offers a new way to engage with Javier’s vision. By arranging the panels in a circle, the art becomes a space to be inhabited. It brings together Janvier’s striking imagery with a sense of ceremonial culture to create an immersive experience.

TIP Exhibition

EXHIBITION DESCRIPTION:

The Technical Invention Prize (TIP) is awarded to the technicians working in theatre or any part of the entertainment industry who make gadgets, devices or basically simple and smart solutions for our kind of work: those clever ideas that are mostly realized by inexpensive means and materials. The apparatus might only be used in one particular theatre, company, traveling show, sometimes just one country. This is an opportunity to share these inventions and clever devices with the international community.

We are exhibiting 9 inventions selected by the 2022 TIP jury, including the 3 prize winners!
