Joshua Dachs
Joshua Dachs is recognized as one of the world’s leading theatre consultants. Drawing on a background as a violinist, trained as an architect, and having practiced as a theatrical set and lighting designer, he has led FDA’s consulting practice for over 30 years, providing planning, programming, and design leadership for hundreds of successful projects. In early phases he focuses his work on helping clients conceptualize and plan their projects, and during the design phase focuses on room shaping, seating layouts and sightlines, backstage layouts, and overall spatial organization. He has helped plan and design four opera houses, including the Four Seasons Centre Opera House in Toronto; worked with major orchestras including the NY Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Cleveland Orchestra, Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, and designed the newest Broadway theatre, the Stephen Sondheim. He has conceived and created some of the most innovative – and practical – flexible and transformable performance venues in the world. His work at the Park Avenue Armory and the Shed have defined a new building type; this work is now being widely copied around the world. He is deeply familiar with Arts Commons because he led the 2007 facilities assessment; collaborated with Bing Thom Architects on the subsequent facility master planning studies for the Resident House site, exploring many alternatives for reconfiguration and facility upgrade or replacement; and a couple of years later worked again with Bing Thom to test the Road House site and its capacity to accommodate additional theatres, with and without a residential tower. He has deep experience working on large, complex projects with complex leadership structures involving governments and multiple users and stakeholders, such as Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and Miami Dade County.
Scott Reid
Scott Reid has been designing for theatre, opera and dance for over 30 years. He is a set, lighting and projection designer. Although based in Calgary, Scott’s designs, have been seen across North America. He has enjoyed designing for such diverse projects as theatre for young audiences touring shows, new plays, as well as large-scale operas, theater and ballets. scottreiddesign.com
